Basket of Waste Services Roadshow makes its way to Kuils River

The Urban Waste Management (UWM) Directorate’s Basket of Waste Services
Roadshow is set to make its fourth stop on its journey through the city on
Tuesday, 25 April, this time at the Van Riebeeck Community Centre in Kuils
River. Residents in surrounding communities are encouraged to take the chance
to raise any challenges they are experiencing for discussion with
representatives from the directorate. The next rollout of home composting
containers will also commence at this event.
The following departments/branches will be available for engagement:
· Cleansing Services: Area cleaning, removal of illegal dumping and refuse collection in informal settlements.
· Refuse Collection Services: Emptying the 240l wheelie bins on collection day, the running of the Think-Twice recycling collection service in participating areas, and to find the contact details of the relevant service provider.
· Waste Minimisation: Guiding all stakeholders on strategies to increase waste minimisation and helping to facilitate a circular economy in Cape Town.
· Events and Partnerships: Assisting with once-off volunteer community clean-up events and other partnerships.
· Policy and Strategy: Strategic support, accreditation of waste service providers responsible for Integrated Waste Management Policy and By-law and the development of UWM sector plan.
· By-law Enforcement: Waging the war on illegal dumping through enforcement of the Integrated Waste Management By-law.
· Revenue and Budgets: Sets tariffs and manage budgets for the directorate, ensuring collected revenue.
Rollout of home composting containers
The City will also begin the rollout of an additional 200 home composting containers on this day, all of which are earmarked for distribution to residents, at no charge, from the Revenue and Budget branch's table at the event. Containers will be distributed on a first come-first-served basis. Residents must bring a recent municipal account and their ID to benefit.
Total budget assigned to rollout of home composting containers this financial year is R3,2 million to assist with diversion of organic waste from landfill, extending our available landfill airspace and reducing the global warming potential of landfills.
'One of the main reasons for littering and dumping is a lack of awareness by residents on what services are available, as well as what their responsibilities are as a community. The Basket of Waste Services Roadshow aims to raise awareness of the services that are available to manage waste and how communities can access these services.
'We also want to hear thoughts and suggestions from communities on how resources can be used more effectively in their areas. We will always take thoughts and advice into consideration,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
